FAR 52.217-9 Option To Extend the Term of the Contract.
The codified text (eCFR, as of 2026-10-02). Under the Revolutionary FAR Overhaul ↗, agencies follow class deviations with new text for many parts while the formal rules go through the Federal Register: check the solicitation and your contract's clauses, which rule.
In plain English
This clause lets the Government extend the contract term by giving written notice within a stated period, as long as it first gives the Contractor preliminary written notice of its intent to extend before the contract expires. The preliminary notice does not obligate the Government to actually extend. Any extension keeps this same option clause in the contract, and the total contract duration including all options cannot exceed the stated limit.
Applies to: Contracts that include this option clause, as prescribed in FAR 17.208(g)
What it requires
- The Government must give the Contractor preliminary written notice of intent to extend at least the stated number of days before the contract expires
- The Government must give written notice to the Contractor within the stated period to exercise the option

(b) If the Government exercises this option, the extended contract shall be considered to include this option clause.
