FAR 52.228-5 Insurance—Work on a Government Installation.

The codified text (eCFR, as of 2026-10-02). Under the Revolutionary FAR Overhaul ↗, agencies follow class deviations with new text for many parts while the formal rules go through the Federal Register: check the solicitation and your contract's clauses, which rule.

In plain English

This clause requires the contractor to carry and maintain certain insurance during the entire contract, at its own cost. Before starting work, the contractor must tell the contracting officer in writing that the insurance is in place, and the policies must include a cancellation notice provision. The contractor must also pass these requirements down to subcontractors doing work on a Government installation.

Applies to: Contractors and subcontractors performing work on a Government installation under a contract that includes this clause.

What it requires

  • Provide and maintain the required insurance at your own expense during the entire contract.
  • Notify the Contracting Officer in writing before starting work that the insurance has been obtained.
  • Ensure policies have an endorsement that cancellation or material change is not effective until the longer of state law period or 30 days after written notice to the Contracting Officer.
  • Include the substance of this clause in subcontracts that require work on a Government installation and require subcontractors to maintain the required insurance.
