FAR and DFARS › FAR Part 52: Solicitation Provisions and Contract Clauses › Subpart 52.2
FAR 52.232-18 Availability of Funds.
The codified text (eCFR, as of 2026-10-02). Under the Revolutionary FAR Overhaul ↗, agencies follow class deviations with new text for many parts while the formal rules go through the Federal Register: check the solicitation and your contract's clauses, which rule.
In plain English
This clause states that no funds are currently available for the contract. The Government is only obligated to pay once appropriated funds are made available to the Contracting Officer and the Contractor receives written notice of that availability. This matters because a contractor cannot rely on payment until that notice is received.
Applies to: Contracts that include the Availability of Funds clause
Key terms: Availability of Funds · appropriated funds · Contracting Officer · legal liability · notice of availability

The text
As prescribed in 32.706-1(a), insert the following clause:
Availability of Funds (APR 1984)
Funds are not presently available for this contract. The Government's obligation under this contract is contingent upon the availability of appropriated funds from which payment for contract purposes can be made. No legal liability on the part of the Government for any payment may arise until funds are made available to the Contracting Officer for this contract and until the Contractor receives notice of such availability, to be confirmed in writing by the Contracting Officer.
