FAR 52.247-1 Commercial Bill of Lading Notations.
The codified text (eCFR, as of 2026-10-02). Under the Revolutionary FAR Overhaul ↗, agencies follow class deviations with new text for many parts while the formal rules go through the Federal Register: check the solicitation and your contract's clauses, which rule.
In plain English
This clause applies when the Contracting Officer authorizes shipment on a commercial bill of lading and the Contractor will be reimbursed for those transportation costs as direct allowable costs. Before shipment, the Contractor must make sure the commercial shipping documents carry the required annotation, choosing the version that matches whether the Government is shown as consignor or consignee. It matters because the annotation protects the Contractor's ability to be reimbursed for those transportation charges.
Applies to: Contractors shipping supplies on a commercial bill of lading with reimbursable transportation costs, when authorized by the Contracting Officer
What it requires
- Ensure before shipment that the commercial shipping documents are annotated with the applicable notation
- Use the notation in paragraph (a) if the Government is shown as the consignor or consignee
- Use the notation in paragraph (b) if the Government is not shown as the consignor or consignee
- Name the specific agency in the annotation
