IT services government contracts
In fiscal year 2026, federal agencies obligated $70.03B on IT services contracts so far (Defense contracts arrive about 90 days late, so the year's total is still rising). Department of Defense bought the most, followed by Department of Veterans Affairs. 78 IT services contract opportunities are open now on SAM.gov, and 10,011 contracts worth $271.52B with options end in the next 12 months.
Software, systems integration, IT operations, help desk, cybersecurity and other information technology services: one of the largest areas of federal service spending.
Set-asides: at least 20% of FY2026's IT services contract dollars ($14.24B) went through contracts set aside for small businesses, most through small business and service-disabled veteran-owned set-asides. Many orders under larger contracts carry no set-aside code, so this counts only what is reported. How set-asides work →

How the government buys IT services work
- Most IT money flows through contract vehicles: GSA's Multiple Award Schedule, government-wide acquisition contracts (GWACs) such as 8(a) STARS and Polaris, and agency IDIQs. Find which vehicles carry the work before chasing single notices.
- The Defense Department has begun adding CMMC cybersecurity requirements to its contracts (phased in from November 2025); civilian agencies follow NIST rules for systems and data.
- Cleared staff are a requirement for much defense and intelligence work.
Industry codes
Federal contracts are filed under NAICS industry codes. This page counts these; each has its own page with every office that buys it and the newest awards.
