FAR and DFARS › FAR Part 11: Describing Agency Needs › Subpart 11.2
FAR 11.202 Maintenance of standardization documents.
The codified text (eCFR, as of 2026-10-02). Under the Revolutionary FAR Overhaul ↗, agencies follow class deviations with new text for many parts while the formal rules go through the Federal Register: check the solicitation and your contract's clauses, which rule.
In plain English
This section explains how changes to standardization documents are recommended and how agencies should handle modified documents. It matters to contractors mainly because it shows that specifications and standards can be changed through a formal process, and that agencies must follow specific guidance when they modify a document they cite.
Applies to: Agencies submitting recommendations for changes to standardization documents and agencies that modify existing standardization documents
What it requires
- Submit recommendations for changes to standardization documents listed in the GSA Index of Federal Specifications, Standards and Commercial Item Descriptions to the General Services Administration, Federal Supply Service, Office of Acquisition, Washington, DC 20406.
- Submit recommendations for changes to standardization documents available at the ASSIST website to the cognizant preparing activity.
- When citing an existing standardization document but modifying it to meet its needs, follow the guidance in Federal Standardization Manual and, for Defense components, DoD Manual 4120.24, Defense Standardization Program (DSP) Procedures.
