Security guard government contracts
In fiscal year 2026, federal agencies obligated $7.60B on security guard contracts so far (Defense contracts arrive about 90 days late, so the year's total is still rising). Department of Homeland Security bought the most, followed by Department of State. 11 security guard contract opportunities are open now on SAM.gov, and 590 contracts worth $17.62B with options end in the next 12 months.
Armed and unarmed guard services for federal buildings, courthouses, military installations and other sites. The Department of Homeland Security's Federal Protective Service is one of the largest buyers, for the protective security officers in GSA-managed buildings.
Set-asides: at least 7% of FY2026's security guard contract dollars ($529.66M) went through contracts set aside for small businesses, most through 8(a) and small business set-asides. Many orders under larger contracts carry no set-aside code, so this counts only what is reported. How set-asides work →

How the government buys security guard work
- Service contracts over $2,500 fall under the Service Contract Act: the solicitation includes a Department of Labor wage determination, the minimum wages and fringe benefits you must pay on the contract. Price from it, not from your commercial rates.
- Guards usually need a state guard license, firearms qualification for armed posts, and a federal background investigation before they start. Count the time to get officers cleared in your transition plan.
- Contracts are priced per guard hour; staffing every post on every shift, overtime and relief coverage are where bids are won or lost.
