Facilities maintenance and support government contracts

In fiscal year 2026, federal agencies obligated $38.71B on facilities support contracts so far (Defense contracts arrive about 90 days late, so the year's total is still rising). Department of Energy bought the most, followed by Department of Defense. 35 facilities support contract opportunities are open now on SAM.gov, and 1,526 contracts worth $233.38B with options end in the next 12 months.

Operating and maintaining government facilities: base operations support, building operations and maintenance, and the combined facility services contracts that bundle custodial, grounds, HVAC and other trades.

Set-asides: at least 6% of FY2026's facilities support contract dollars ($2.16B) went through contracts set aside for small businesses, most through 8(a) and small business set-asides. Many orders under larger contracts carry no set-aside code, so this counts only what is reported. How set-asides work →

How the government buys facilities support work

  • These are often large contracts, many held by big primes; small businesses win the set-aside ones and subcontract trades under the rest.
  • Service contracts over $2,500 fall under the Service Contract Act: the solicitation includes a Department of Labor wage determination, the minimum wages and fringe benefits you must pay on the contract. Price from it, not from your commercial rates.
  • GSA's Public Buildings Service buys operations and maintenance for federal buildings; military installations buy base operations support.
